When the synod reconvenes, it won't be quite the same. Some who participated in this year's meeting won't be back (I'm thinking of papal critic Cardinal Raymond Burke). And Francis will likely select new cardinals come February.

We do know that Cardinal Raymond Burke was the moderator (chair) and Archbishop John Dew was the relator (secretary) of Group A. Cardinal Wilfrid Napier was moderator of Group B and Archbishop Diarmuid Martin was relator. And Group C had as moderator Archbishop Joseph Kurtz with Archbishop Stephen Brislin as relator.

He doesn't mean we the synod, or we the rest of the church. He means we the Germans, we the Europeans, we the West. In other words, it's up to the churches of Africa to handle their own pastoral challenges. Just as "they should not tell us too much what we have to do." That's hardly dismissive, or xenophobic, or worse. It's just good theological sense.

It reminds me of the Second Vatican Council, the great Church council in the early 1960s, when so much change was happening. Once people realize what the Holy Spirit can do, it gives them a lot more trust and openness and freedom.
